Iron Curtain- 1945-1991- Physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate from the end of World War II at 1945 to the end of the Cold War 1991. Took shape around the boarder defense between the countries of Europe in the middle of the continent. Some event that demolished the Iron Curtain were the discontent in Poland and this kept going through Germany, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. Baby boom- 1946-1964- This occurs when women start having more than 2 births per 100+ women. Blacklist- 1947-1960- Where industry leaders would post names of workers who were injured, didn’t complete jobs these people would get blacklisted and then this made finding a job very difficult. Cold War- 1945-1991- Was a war that had little combat was more of a race to see who could accomplish more. The competing was done between the US and the USSR. Arms race dealt with who could make the biggest army the fastest and whose was the strongest. War of words rather than combat. Containment- 1953-1961- The attempt to try and contain and disperse communism in Europe. Was also the starting ground for the Cold War. Cult of Domesticity- 1950-A system that was spreading through upper and middleclass society in the US and parts of Great Britain. Wanted to make women have a bigger role in society along with social equality. This also brought around the court case of Muller vs. Oregon dealing with non-domestic work should not interfere with their daily work for the family. Domino Theory- 1950- 1980- If one country fell to communism the rest would soon follow right behind it. Eisenhower Doctrine- January 5th 1957- Discussing the problems in the Middle East and their request for US helps economically and assists from US military. Fallout shelters- 1956- They would have been used in the event of the Soviet Union or other countries that might bomb the US. Like a underground stronghold to protect US citizens during the Cold War. G.I.Bill- 1956- Allowed war veterans to attend collage well under government funding so they could receive a better education and get a job when they leave military services. HUAC- 1947-1975- House Un-American activities committee and its first chairman was Edward J. Hart. King Jr., Martin Luther- 1929-1968- He led the Montgomery bus boycott during 1955 and started the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Korean War- 1950- 1953- The division of Korea by many political debates and the division a crossed the 38th parallel. Levittowns- 1947- 1951- Name from Levitt and Sons and this company was founded by William Levitt. Little Rock Nine- 1957- A school event that helped push the abolitions of segregation a step forward and push towards equality in schools and integration of colored people into all white school. Marshall Plan- 1951- 1952- The Marshall Plan was later on replaced with the Mutual Security Plan also this helped fund Europe economically to turn them from communism. Massive retaliation- 1954- The US would retaliate with nuclear weapons against communist countries if they attacked the US or its allies. McCarthyism- 1950- 1954- Also can be known as the “Second Red Scare” an attack on political foundations using demagogic attack. Montgomery Bus Boycott- 1955- 1956- African Americans boycotting the public transportation system of busses due to the arrest of Rosa Parks. NATO- 1955- (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Dealt with US alliances also supported a military. Parks, Rosa- 1955- Sparked civil disobedience and a bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama. She refused to give up her seat to a white man on bus so she was arrested. Red Scare- 1950- 1957- A better name for this would have been McCarthyism. A fear of communism in the US had increased. SEATO- 1954- Southeast Asia Treaty Organization- A defensive action that was meant to stop communism from spreading into Southeast Asia. Segregation- 1950- 1959- During the 1950’s segregation was being pushed out of schools trying to make all students able to obtain the same education. Sit-ins- 1958- in Oklahoma City several African Americans went to a lunch bar and sat down and waited to be served this were a attempt to desegregate restaurants. Space Race- 1957- 1959- A technological race between the US and USSR to see who could get a successful space exploration first. Sputnik- 1957- The USSR’s first satellite launched into orbit and was a major success for advanced USSR technology. Suburbs- 1950’s- Main residents were white and of the middle class family. The Warren Court- 1953- 1969- The main focus of this was to expand on civil rights and liberties giving more basic right to the people of the US. Truman Doctrine- 1952- In 1952 the two countries of joined NATO to receive military support and protection from the USSR and other communist attack.
